Neck & Shoulder Pain
If left unaddressed, these conditions can develop into chronic issues that interfere with daily tasks such as driving, lifting, or simply turning your head. Ultimately, poor posture, muscle imbalances, or repetitive movements tend to be the leading causes of neck and shoulder discomfort.
What is Neck & Shoulder Pain ?
Neck and shoulder pain can arise from a range of factors, typically linked to improper posture, muscle fatigue, or certain medical conditions. Sitting for long periods, especially with poor posture, can cause tightness and stiffness in these areas. Likewise, sleeping in an awkward position can lead to discomfort or soreness the following day.
Injuries, such as whiplash from car accidents or strains from repetitive overhead movements, are frequent culprits of neck and shoulder pain. Conditions like arthritis, herniated discs, or nerve compression (e.g., cervical radiculopathy) may also contribute to ongoing pain and limited movement. Stress and emotional tension often exacerbate muscle tightness, making pain worse.
What are the symptoms of Neck & Shoulder Pain?
Neck and shoulder pain can manifest in various ways, depending on the underlying cause. The pain may be localized or radiate to other areas, affecting mobility, posture, and daily activities.
Common symptoms include:
- Sharp, shooting pain: May travel up into the head, down the back, or into the arms and hands.
- Dull, aching discomfort: Often felt in the neck, shoulders, or upper back, making it difficult to sit for long periods.
- Tingling or numbness: Can occur in the arms, hands, or fingers, often due to nerve compression.
- Muscle tightness and stiffness: This may restrict movement and make it difficult to turn the head or lift the arms.
- Headaches: Often tension-related, originating from tight neck and shoulder muscles.
- Pain when lifting or reaching: Shoulder pain can worsen with movement, limiting daily tasks.
Since the neck and shoulders are closely connected, issues in one area often affect the other. Early intervention is key to preventing chronic pain and further complications.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Neck & Shoulder Pain?
At Kalamazoo Chiropractic Rehabilitation, we use Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization and Posture Respiration Institute techniques to focus on getting to the root cause of neck and shoulder pain. Many times, the issue lies in improper breathing and rib cage function. By correcting your rib cage and breathing, we can provide relief for your neck and shoulders.
From there, we teach you how to move your neck and shoulders again. This is the biggest thing that most traditional chiropractic and physical therapy treatments miss – the return to function. For example, if you’re a baseball player and need to throw, we’ll help you get back to throwing again. If you’re a golfer and your shoulder range of motion is limited, we’ll help you rebuild that range and teach you how to use your shoulder properly for the sport.
In our office, we focus on three things: Finding the root cause, providing individualized care, and offering goal- or outcome-focused treatment. Whatever your goal is, we aim to get you back to it as quickly and safely as possible.
